Unit 1: Engineering as a Built & Biased Artifact

Explore the meaning and impact of political artifacts. Analyze your own journey through engineering. Discuss ideological and mindset barriers to rendering social justice visible in both engineering practice and education. Begin the semester-long project with an introduction to CU library resources.

 

Unit 2: Listening to Individual Consequences of Engineering

Continue the semester-long project through a contextual listening exercise, interview tips, and field observation guidelines. Understand the importance of qualitative research and delve into the methodology and design of a qualitative study. Hear and read unique stories about the consequences of design artifacts.

 

Unit 3: Bias in Systems, Algorithms, and Modern Technology

Understand the value of community engagement and begin thinking about the end of semester showcase. Analyze the consequences of machine learning algorithms built with homogenous data. Discuss what designing for inclusion means in industry and how you can do your part.

 

Student Showcases

Presentations prepared by students of the spring 2021 pilot course on engaging the audience in how to design for inclusion. The three showcase themes include political artifacts, societal issues, and education and the pandemic.
